As part of the National Guard's participation in the fourth annual WV Homeland Security Summit and Expo at Marshall University, The Media Center provided satellite uplink services and a live internet stream of training exercises taking place at the WV Turnpike Memorial Tunnel. Senator Jay Rockefeller and United States Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano were able to watch the training exercises via a live Internet stream.
A special ceremony to commemorate the events that took place at the Upper Big Branch Coal Mine on April 5, 2010 will took place on year later at the Whitesville Elementary School Gymnasium, only a couple of miles from the entrance to the mine. The ceremony recognized the 29 miners that died on that day, the first responders and mine rescue teams that took part in the search and recovery efforts.
